Match report SMU-SP

9th January 2009
IVP 08/09
SMU VS SP (Men’s)
Period 1
The game started with SP having chances at the slot area but well-denied by the tight defence from SMU. It was pretty much an even game until SMU started to take control. SP read the game and took chances at counter attacks when SMU commits mistakes. The first excitement of the game came when SMU Captain #37 took a shot from the right side of the court and hit the far left of the goal post. It certainly got his team hyped up! A short while later, celebration came from SMU when #11 scored from where his captain tried. It was an exciting period filled with many counter-attacks.
(1-0)
Period 2
SMU started the fresh period with a bang! The players went after the ball hard and fast in attempt to further their lead. Despite the strong pressure from SMU, credits had to be given to SP for holding a superbly tight defence. SP managed to cut out passes by SMU and #90 burst right through to SMU’s half with the ball but only to hear the sound of the ball hitting the post. The disappointment in his face showed it all. Morale of SP went up when #9 equalised the game with an unexpected backhand goal the got through the legs of SMU keeper. Both teams were high on spirits! Shortly after, a bench penalty of 2-minutes was given to SP for incorrect push. Although they were one-man down, SP gave a hard time for SMU to play offensively. When the play was back to 5v5, SMU #21 was given the space to take a far shot towards the goal from their left offensive half. SP was absolutely stunned by SMU #7 who took the rebound at the blind side.
(2-1)
Period 3
Both teams began to play more aggressively, physically challenging every opponent. The spectators were scared by the players when the play was near the boards. Soon enough, one of the SMU player was punished for his aggressive play. However, SP could not put a ball through the net. Within seconds after it was back to 5v5, another SMU player was sent to the sin bin. Unfortunately, SP could not control the flow of game with players releasing the ball impatiently and shots flying all over but at the goal. At the last few minutes of the game, SMU #33 swiftly placed the ball above the keeper’s leg and brought the score to 3-1. SP fought very hard knowing that little time was left. SP #90 ended the game with a magnificent drag shot at an impossible angle, leaving the game 3-2 to SMU.
